MINUTES OF ANNUAL MEETING AND SPRING FORUM
ACLU – Colorado Springs Chapter • April 15, 2008
The Annual Meeting and Spring Forum commenced at 7:05 PM after months of preparation and planning. Everyone was welcomed. Refreshments were available.
Chair, Bill Durland brought the Annual Meeting, announced the agenda and indicated that copies of the announcement flyer, Goals for the 2008 year, and State of the Chapter Report for 2007 were available. He reported the budget for the coming year is cut 50 percent so contributions are welcome and encouraged ($40.12 was collected in a contribution basket). The updated website was explained to the sixty plus members and guests in attendance. The Guantanamo Bay Project was announced as well as a meeting on it with the Assistant City Manager. A recent presentation by the speakers’ bureau was reported (Bill Durland on hate speech at SCU-Pueblo), also an article in the Active for Justice newspaper on free speech zones. References to the November ballot referenda were announced and ACLU potential positions. The formation of an ACLU-Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission-Police and City Government meeting on the State Democratic Convention was reported. Two members of the Board will be leaving after their terms expire and were thanked for their services – Jim White and Clara Anne McKenna. The Annual Meeting and Forum was recorded and will be made available by Peter Haney of PPJPC.
The main item of business was the report of the Nominations Committee by Steve Flynn. Nominated were Rick Haas, Max Hale, Mike Siddoway and Michael Duncan. Nominations were accepted from the floor and added to the list. They were Jennifer Trujillo-Sanchez, Angela Cobian, and Megan Helseth. Nominations were closed and approved. A ballot with bios will be mailed to the members for voting within the month. The business part of the Annual Meeting closed and the Spring Forum began.

An excellent group of speakers followed: Main speaker Taylor Pendergrass, State ACLU attorney and panelists, Hon. Jan Martin, City Council member, Deputy Chief Steve Liebowitz, Colorado Springs Police Department, Bill Sulzman, founder of Citizens for Peace in Space and long time local peace activist and Dennis Apuan, Vice Chair of the El Paso County Democratic Party and ACLU Board member. Presentations were well received. Taylor spoke on planning and preparation for the Democratic National Convention in Denver and applicable law. Local panelists spoke relating to the State Convention to be held in Colorado Springs in May. A follow-up meeting will be held to bring activists, Democrats, Police and City officials together to ensure free speech and public safety. Applicable regulations will be made available and revisions recommended if necessary. The meeting and forum were adjourned at 9:02 PM by Chair Bill Durland.
