Legal Department Docket, 2002-Present
Case Name: Denver parade permit ordinance
Case Number:
ACLU Case Number: 2002-13
Description: The ACLU received complaints that applicants for parade permits in Denver were required to agree in writing to indemnify the City for damages that might be caused by the actions of persons over whom they had no control, including Denver police officers. After receiving a demand letter from ACLU volunteer attorneys, the City Attorney’s office agreed to recommend an ordinance change to the City Council. The amendments to the ordinance were adopted in early 2004, thus resolving the matter without litigation.
Issues: Freedom of Expression
