CYCLE (Colorado Youth Civil Liberties Expo)
Saturday, November 19. 2005
10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
The ACLU of Colorado sponsors this event to promote interest and recognition of Colorado high school ACLU clubs. CYCLE forms a community of high school students with similar questions, goals, and interests. Colorado’s youth have a desire to learn about civil liberties. CYCLE ignites that desire and creates long-lasting relationships among the high school ACLU clubs in order to guarantee those interests are addressed.
Held at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, CYCLE is a day-long event consisting of mini-seminars, workshops and discussion groups led by law professors from the D.U. law school, ACLU staff, cooperating attorneys, and other community leaders. High school mentors, friends, teachers and even parents have attended in the past. All admitted are treated to program materials, food and beverages.
This event is about the students! It is fun and educational day reserved for high school students, whether or not they are ACLU members, who are interested in learning about civil liberties. Workshops in the past have included First Amendment issues, Search & Seizure, Drug Laws, Death Penalty, Abortion, Patriot Act, etc…and students also learn about ACLU clubs, i.e. establishing, maintaining, and event planning.
The event’s goal is that young people all over Colorado have a voice and a venue through which they can express their views on civil liberties. Some questions students are encouraged to keep in mind throughout the day, that we hope will follow them beyond the walls of the DU Law School classrooms are: What is freedom? What do you understand your rights to be in your high school, in Denver, Colorado, and, ultimately, in the United States of America? What do you believe should be changed regarding those rights, and what do you believe should be preserved?
CYCLE’s success is based on the recognition that high school students are vital to our country’s future. Understanding the basic rights and freedoms given to us by the Constitution is important for all Americans, no matter our age, race, or sex, in order to preserve democracy, effect change both in our government and in our culture, and ensure that we continue to be free citizens.
YEP plans to expand this program in the future by creating a one-day leadership retreat, or mini-CYCLE, aimed at the club presidents/leaders and their teachers. We plan to have speakers, workshops, and a “needs assessment” of each high school’s ACLU club.
CYCLE registration prior to November 12, 2005 is $10. After this date, registration at the door is $15. Click here to download the registration form. Scholarships are also available! Click here to access the scholarship form.
