Issues We Care About

The ACLU of Colorado is made up of a diverse group of people who are concerned about safeguarding freedom and liberty. Issues we care about are wide-ranging and broad in their nature; they include the right to free speech, religious freedom, and the right to peaceably assemble, among others.

This section is a collection of research papers, articles, reports and editorials written by members of the Colorado ACLU family, about our civil liberties and the significance of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. ACLU of Colorado official position statements on issues, editorial articles and submissions on other issues may be added from time to time.

Spying by National Security Agency - President Bush’s authorizing the National Security Agency (NSA) to spy on private individual’s communications and data without a warrant is both unlawful and unconstitutional. Recent news suggests that the NSA may have started spying even before the President authorized it.

Domestic Violence Protection - The ACLU filed a petition with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on behalf of Jessica Gonzales, the mother of three children who were killed by their father after the Castle Rock, Colorado police refused to enforce her restraining order against him.

Public Schools and Religious Holidays, The “December Dilemma” by Bruce DeBoskey, Regional Director, Anti-Defamation League Mountain States Region - Every December, Colorado localities and public schools face the holiday season with decisions to make. Should they acknowledge Christmas? If so, how? What about the other holidays of the season? The Anti-Defamation League issues guidelines to Colorado public school superintendents, mayors and county officials to insure that the holidays are acknowledged in a sensitive, respectful and constitutional way.

Academic Freedom and the First Amendment - A research paper that compares and contrasts Freedom of Speech as described in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Academic Freedom in post-secondary educational institutions.
