  • Filed: November 20, 2006
  • Court: Colorado Civil Rights Commission
  • Latest Update: Jun 10, 2007
In the Courts, ACLU of Colorado logo on a blue background with a woman holding the scales of justice.

The issue in this case is discrimination against women in a place of public accommodation. The ACLU’s client is a prominent female pool player. She challenges a new rule of the American Pool Players Association, which sponsors many pool competitions throughout the country, including venues in Colorado. In the past, women were permitted to compete in the men’s divisions. The new rule excludes women from competing in that division. The ACLU initiated a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division, which is assigned responsibility for enforcing Colorado’s statute that prohibits gender discrimination in places of public accommodation.
