The ACLU of Colorado sent a letter to the Superintendent of Littleton Public Schools after being notified that a student was discouraged from sitting in protest during the Pledge of Allegiance.

ACLU of Colorado sued the Douglas County School District, Douglas County Sheriff and several School Resource Officers for violating a student’s rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fourth Amendment.

This lawsuit, in which ACLU lawyers participated as intervenors, is closely related to the ACLU’s challenge to the Choice Scholarship Pilot Program, the voucher program adopted by the Douglas County School District (DCSD) in 2011 that would channel public money to private religious schools.

This lawsuit challenges a school voucher plan devised by the Douglas County School Board with the approval of the Colorado State Board of Education, to funnel tax dollars allocated for public education to private schools, including private religious schools.
